Sex Issues
What Are They?
Here are just a few:
Erectile dysfunction, lack of enjoyment, lack of interest, gender identity clarification, exploration of kinks, opening up a monogamous relationship, infidelity, compulsive or “out of control” sexual behavior, exploration of sexuality/ new sexual identity or sexual practice
How Do They Impact People and Relationships?
Sex can be a wonderful arena for play, pleasure, and rejuvenation- both individually and with partner(s). Sex can also be a source of incredible pain and insecurity.
Our sex life touches on every aspect of who we are and can have wide ranging effects on our happiness, life satisfaction, and relationships.
Being in conflict with yourself, your partner(s), or messages you received about what makes sex “right” or “healthy” can result in anxiety, depression, relational conflict, hopelessness, decreases sexual satisfaction, and reduced self esteem.
How can Sex Therapy Help?
Sex Therapy, both individually and with relationships, looks at what elements you want to have in your sex life in order for it to feel exciting, authentic, and enjoyable.
Whether that’s new techniques, new ways of thinking about what healthy sex can be, or new ways of self-advocating, sex therapy can help you to feel more clear and confident engaging intimately with yourself and others.
Sex therapy is an integrative practice which means you will be treated as a complete person and your biological/physiological health will be considered alongside your spiritual (not necessarily religious) health, emotional health, relational health, and psychological health to support your becoming your most genuine and comfortable self.
Sex is an important part of who we are, but it isn’t all that we are. In fact, some people aren’t very interested in sex at all or are only interested in certain kinds of sex or sex at certain times (which are all healthy!), A focus of sex therapy will be exploring your own thoughts and desires around sex so that you can articulate what things you are or are not interested in from a place of acceptance and authenticity.
